Federico Gutierrez, winner of the Team for Colombia consultation and potential candidate?
Federico Gutierrez achieved the official candidacy for the center-right party with more that 1.7 million votes. The former mayor of Medellin has won the Barguil (Char) Penalosa, Barguil (Char), and Tab of Los Cristianos.
Federico Gutierrez is a former mayor of Medellin and was born in that city in 1974. He has been an elected Medellin Municipal Youth Councilor since the year 2003. Gutierrez is a Civil Engineer by trade from the University of Medellin has a Specialization degree in senior management from the Pontifical Bolivarian University and one in Political Science.
Federico Gutierrez's career in the field of business was not all about politics. As a councilman he supported the mayoralty of Sergio Fajardo and later that of Alonso Salazar. In 2015, he re-entered his goal and reached the Mayor's Office of Medellin. Like all mayors facing the Hidroituango projects they were plagued by corruption. He was also involved in the Panama Papers investigation by Daniel Coronell for keeping his funds in tax havens and for corruption.
He has even confronted the former mayors he backed and has recently said that "I have been in solidarity with the people who are in this report because I don't believe that anyone decides so that a tunnel falls, and one is in solidarity. And what certain sectors do is an attack by political strategy."
A new race is being contested for the presidency
In October 2021 the so-called Experience coalition was created and eventually became the Team for Colombia. Federico Gutierrez, the Center-right coalition won the candidacy. He now has the character of support for Paola Holguin (a congresswoman from the Democratic Center who ran again in 2022 for an additional seat).
